02

Depth without a checklist

Benefit: 5 days gives the route room to breathe.

For: Independent travelers who want fewer logistics surprises.

04

A flexible framework

Benefit: The detailed planning stays available when you need it, not before.

For: Couples, families, and first-time visitors.

05

A route you can adapt

Benefit: Use the day structure as a base for your dates, pace, and priorities.

For: Culture, food, and first-time travel

Five days is the best first-visit length for Beijing when you want the major imperial sites, one Great Wall day, traditional neighborhoods, local food, and enough recovery time to enjoy them. This route separates the most strenuous days and keeps one flexible museum-and-neighborhood day.

The plan assumes five nights in a central hotel, normal mobility, metro use, and travel outside a major public holiday. It is more comfortable than the 3 Days Beijing Itinerary, although every day still requires advance decisions.

DayThemeMain routeOvernight
1Arrival and neighborhood orientationHotel, Dongcheng, Wangfujing or hutong walkBeijing
2Imperial centerTiananmen option, Forbidden City, Jingshan, GulouBeijing
3Great WallMutianyu or Badaling day tripBeijing
4Temple and south BeijingTemple of Heaven, Qianmen, food eveningBeijing
5Imperial gardens and flexible cultureSummer Palace, then museum/art/neighborhood optionBeijing

Pace: moderate, with active Days 2, 3, and 5. Booking anchors: Forbidden City, Tiananmen if used, Great Wall transport, Temple of Heaven combo ticket, Summer Palace ticket, and any museum with real-name reservation.

This itinerary suits first-time visitors, couples, families with school-age children, culture travelers, and anyone using Beijing as the main historical base of a China trip. It balances famous sites with practical recovery.

Travelers focused on hiking can choose Jinshanling and protect a longer Great Wall day. Museum specialists should add a sixth day. Visitors with limited mobility can keep the five-day structure but replace Jingshan and Longevity Hill climbs with accessible lower routes and private transfers.

Read the Beijing Travel Guide, then book:

  1. Arrival, departure, and a central refundable hotel.
  2. Forbidden City entry at the official release time.
  3. Tiananmen Square separately if required.
  4. Great Wall section, transport, shuttle, and cable-car choice.
  5. Temple of Heaven and Summer Palace products.
  6. Any chosen museum.
  7. One signature restaurant after the timed entries are fixed.

Spring and autumn offer the easiest outdoor conditions but also strong demand. Summer requires early starts and indoor recovery; winter requires daylight and ice planning. The route intentionally leaves Day 1 flexible because airport, rail, hotel, payment, and jet-lag delays are common.

1

Day 1

Arrival and Dongcheng Orientation

Transport

one airport/station transfer plus walking.

Overnight base

central Dongcheng.

Start area

PEK, PKX, or railway station.

Energy

low.

Cut first

the orientation walk.

Fallback

hotel dinner and early sleep after delay or jet lag.

Morning or afternoon arrival

Confirm the exact airport or station. Use airport rail when its operating hours and transfer fit the hotel, or take an official taxi for luggage and late arrival. The Beijing Transportation Guide explains PEK, PKX, metro payments, and station differences.

Check in, complete passport registration, test mobile payment, and save the hotel address in Chinese. Do not schedule the Forbidden City on this day unless you arrived the previous night.

Late afternoon

Walk one compact area near the hotel. Wangfujing, Dongsi, the moat, or a short Gulou route can provide orientation without an inflexible ticket. Buy water, breakfast supplies if needed, and any missing weather gear.

Evening

Choose an easy neighborhood dinner: dumplings, noodles, or home-style dishes. Save roast duck for a day whose return time is more predictable. Review the next morning's reservations and security approach.

2

Day 2

Forbidden City and the Imperial Axis

Transport

metro/taxi to southern approach; walking; short taxi or metro after exit.

Overnight base

Dongcheng.

Start area

Tiananmen or Meridian Gate.

Energy

high.

Cut first

palace side galleries, then Gulou.

Fallback

retain the palace; skip Jingshan during lightning, ice, or extreme heat.

Morning

Carry the booking passport. Enter Tiananmen Square only with the required separate reservation and enough time for security. Then enter the Forbidden City through Meridian Gate and follow the south-to-north route in the Forbidden City Guide.

Spend three to four hours on the central halls, Inner Court, Imperial Garden, and one side area chosen in advance. The palace is not improved by collecting every room.

Afternoon

Exit north and climb Jingshan Park if weather and mobility allow. The view clarifies the city's imperial geometry. Eat a late lunch or snack, then transfer toward Gulou, the Drum and Bell Towers, or the Lama Temple area for a short neighborhood walk.

Evening

Book Peking duck near Gulou, Dongsi, or Wangfujing. The Beijing Food Guide explains whole-versus-half portions and realistic budgets.

3

Day 3

Great Wall Day Trip

Transport

section-specific transfer; do not navigate to a generic “Great Wall” result.

Overnight base

Dongcheng.

Start area

hotel or transfer meeting point.

Energy

high.

Cut first

extra towers beyond the turnaround and visitor-center shopping.

Fallback

if the Wall closes for unsafe weather, swap Days 3 and 4 and recheck transport.

Morning

Leave early with passport, water, layers, sun protection, and a small snack. The Great Wall Guide compares Mutianyu, Badaling, and Jinshanling.

Choose Mutianyu for balanced scenery and visitor facilities, Badaling for the strongest public-transport infrastructure, or Jinshanling for a more demanding hike and photography day. Confirm the exact section and return before departure.

Afternoon

Allow three to four hours at Mutianyu or Badaling including visitor-center procedures, shuttle, ascent, Wall walking, and descent. Use a cable car when it protects energy or family enjoyment. Turn around before fatigue compromises the descent or meeting time.

Evening

Return traffic varies. Keep dinner near the hotel and do not prepay a distant show. Copper-pot lamb hotpot works well in cool weather; a simple noodle meal may suit a hot day.

4

Day 4

Temple of Heaven, Qianmen, and Beijing Food

Beijing

Transport

metro or short taxi connections.

Overnight base

Dongcheng.

Start area

Temple of Heaven.

Energy

moderate.

Cut first

optional museum or extended shopping.

Fallback

in heavy rain, keep Temple monuments if safe, then use a confirmed indoor venue or hotel break.

Morning

Use Line 5 to East Gate for convenience or taxi to South Gate for a chronological ceremonial route. Follow the Temple of Heaven Guide through the Circular Mound Altar, Imperial Vault, Danbi Bridge, and Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests.

Start early for local park activity and cooler conditions. Allow 2.5–3.5 hours. Check that the ticket includes the headline monument compounds.

Afternoon

Travel to Qianmen and Dashilar. Eat zhajiangmian, dumplings, or a traditional snack, then walk one or two historic commercial streets. Browse selectively; this is a recovery afternoon, not another long attraction list.

An optional museum can replace shopping only when its ticket and closure day are confirmed. Otherwise, return to the hotel for rest.

Evening

Make this the food-focused evening. Choose roast duck if not eaten on Day 2, lamb hotpot, or a guided tasting whose distance and inclusions are clear. Sanlitun is an option for nightlife but adds a transfer.

5

Day 5

Summer Palace and Flexible Modern Beijing

Beijing

Transport

metro/taxi to the selected palace gate; destination-specific afternoon transfer.

Overnight base

Beijing unless departing after a protected buffer.

Start area

Summer Palace gate selected in advance.

Energy

moderate to high.

Cut first

the second afternoon activity, then the hill climb.

Fallback

if weather makes gardens uncomfortable, use a confirmed museum or a slow neighborhood day.

Morning

Follow the Summer Palace Guide. East Palace Gate creates a classic formal route; North Palace Gate is convenient from Line 4; New Palace Gate suits the bridge and lake.

For a standard half-day, combine eastern palaces, the Long Corridor, lakefront, and either the Tower of Buddhist Incense climb or a lower-stair lake route. Do not attempt every edge of Kunming Lake. Boats are seasonal and weather-dependent.

Afternoon

Choose one interest:

  • 798 Art District: contemporary galleries, design, and cafés; check individual opening days.
  • Lama Temple and Wudaoying: active religious site plus neighborhood walking; follow conduct and photography rules.
  • Olympic Park: modern architecture and broad outdoor space.
  • National or Capital Museum: only with current reservations and hours.
  • Hotel recovery: the correct choice before an evening flight or train.

The Summer Palace-to-798 transfer is long, so select it only with energy and time. Lama Temple or hotel recovery usually creates a better final day.

Evening

Collect luggage and allow a generous airport or station buffer. If staying another night, eat near the hotel and review onward tickets. Use the China Travel Guide to connect Beijing with Xi'an, Shanghai, or another carefully chosen base.

Use one hotel for all five nights. Wangfujing, Dongsi, and Dengshikou are strong first-visit bases. Gulou favors atmosphere; Sanlitun favors nightlife; Guomao favors business. The Beijing Hotels Guide compares them.

Confirm passport registration, reception hours, breakfast timing, luggage storage, actual metro walk, room windows, and taxi access. A central hotel is valuable because Days 2 and 3 need easy starts and recovery.

Metro handles central cross-city trips, while taxis help with exact park gates, luggage, and tired evenings. Use an organized transfer or carefully planned public route for the Wall.

Door-to-door buffers:

  • International airport to hotel: often 60–120+ minutes after baggage.
  • Central hotel to Forbidden City security approach: 30–60 minutes.
  • Central Beijing to Great Wall visitor center: commonly 60–120+ minutes each way.
  • Central hotel to Summer Palace: commonly 45–75 minutes.
  • Hotel to major railway station: map time plus 45–60 minutes inside the station process.
  • Hotel to airport: add traffic, terminal, check-in, and security margins.

Editorial estimates checked July 2026, per person excluding hotel and travel to Beijing:

StyleFive-day estimateTypical inclusions
BudgetCNY 2,800–4,000Metro, local meals, independent sights, lower-cost Wall transport
Mid-rangeCNY 4,500–8,000Organized Wall trip, taxis, signature meals, admissions
ComfortableCNY 10,000+Private Wall transport/guide, premium meals, frequent taxis

Hotel costs vary most by season and location. Cable cars, private guides, shopping, alcohol, and paid performances are additional.

For families, shorten palace galleries, use Wall cable cars, keep Day 4 easy, and choose a low-stair Summer Palace route. For mobility limits, confirm accessible gates, replace Jingshan and Longevity Hill climbs, and use door-to-door transfers.

For food travelers, add a breakfast walk on Day 4 and replace 798 with a neighborhood tasting. For history travelers, choose an additional museum on Day 5. For winter, protect daylight and avoid icy climbs. For summer, start early, return to the hotel during peak heat, and move outdoor neighborhood walks to evening.

If you only have four days, combine arrival with orientation and keep Days 2–5, or remove the flexible part of Day 5. Do not merge the Wall with a central attraction.

Carry the ticket passport every day. Save Chinese addresses and confirmations offline. Keep two payment methods and phone battery backup. Alternate high-walking and moderate days. Recheck Monday closures, weather alerts, and official ticket notices.

The ChinaVisit Editorial Team reviewed this route for first-time international travelers on July 13, 2026. Timings and budgets are editorial estimates; official schedules control.

Is five days too long for Beijing?

No. Five days is ideal for a first visit because it supports the major sights without combining every distant attraction into rushed days.

Can I do this itinerary in four days?

Yes by using arrival evening for orientation and removing the flexible afternoon on Day 5. Keep the Great Wall separate.

Which day should be Monday?

Use Monday for the Great Wall, Temple of Heaven park route, or a neighborhood day after checking each site's current rules. Avoid assuming museums are open.

Which Great Wall section is best?

Mutianyu is the all-round default, Badaling is easiest for mass public transport, and Jinshanling is best for stronger hikers with robust logistics.

Should I hire a guide?

A guide adds the most value at the Forbidden City and Great Wall. Independent travel works well for parks and neighborhoods when tickets and transport are prepared.

Is the itinerary family-friendly?

Yes with shortened walks, cable cars, central accommodation, and rest. Day 2 and Day 3 require the most stamina.

How much should I budget?

Excluding hotel, CNY 4,500–8,000 per person is a useful mid-range planning range for five days in July 2026.

Where should I add extra time?

Add a sixth day for museums, 798, a deeper hutong visit, or recovery. Do not add a second distant Wall section unless hiking is the trip's purpose.
